Presently, the Consortium of NLUs conducts the CLAT exam for both UG (Undergraduate) and PG ( Post Graduate) levels. Admission to the BA LLB and LLB Integrated programs offered by different NLUs is determined by the CLAT UG. On the other hand, CLAT PG is intended for individuals who wish to enrol in National Law Universities' LLM programs.
Since the inception of CLAT in 2008, the CLAT exam pattern has undergone major changes in the exam pattern and the marking scheme of the exam over the years. The inaugural exam year of the CLAT in 2008 had a total of 200 marks for 200 questions, and the time duration to complete the paper was 2 hours.
Changes observed in the CLAT Exam between 2015-2020. After recognising the need for a change, in 2020 the Consortium changed the pattern of the CLAT exam. The number of questions was changed from 200 to 150 in 2020. The change made in the year 2020 was a major change where more focus was placed on comprehension passage-based questions. This was done for the need of the students to focus more on a deeper understanding of the law rather than factual details. Earlier, the CLAT exam was more based on one-liner questions, fact-based, assertion reasoning or analytical reasoning. From 2020, the students were required to read passages and answer questions across all the sections, i.e. English, Current Affairs and General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude.
